The Opportunity
This is an end-to-end project ownership role. The Senior Automation Project Manager will take automation programs from process definition and technical concept through supplier selection, equipment development, factory acceptance testing (FAT), installation, commissioning, ramp-up and final acceptance.
Key Responsibilities
Automation development
• Study existing refurbishment, repair, testing, assembly and disassembly processes for smartphones
and laptops.
• Identify opportunities for full or partial automation and translate manufacturing needs into detailed
equipment specifications and user requirement specifications (URS).
• Develop automation concepts jointly with Chinese equipment manufacturers and assess options
against technical feasibility, capital expenditure (CAPEX), cycle time, quality, flexibility and return on
investment (ROI).
Vendor development and management
• Identify, assess and develop capable non-standard automation equipment manufacturers across
China.
• Issue requests for quotation (RFQs) and detailed technical specifications; conduct supplier capability
assessments and compare competing machine concepts.
• Lead technical and commercial discussions, challenge proposed designs, and surface technical risks
before fabrication.
• Monitor schedules, cost, quality and technical deliverables through project completion.
Machine and line engineering
• Review and challenge solutions involving industrial robots and cobots, Cartesian and SCARA robots,
machine vision, AI-based visual inspection, PLC and motion-control systems, servo systems, precision
fixtures and tooling, automated screw-driving, dispensing and adhesives, laser processing, and
automated handling and conveyance.
• Evaluate functional, electrical, camera and sensor testing solutions, together with device
identification, traceability, manufacturing execution system (MES) integration, data collection and
machine connectivity.
Process automation
• Develop solutions for device disassembly, automated screw removal, component identification,
battery and adhesive removal, component separation, cleaning, inspection and grading, and
functional testing.
• Develop solutions for assembly, screw fastening, adhesive application, cosmetic inspection,
packaging and material handling.
Project delivery
• Own each project across the complete equipment lifecycle and establish milestones for design
freeze, mechanical and electrical design, software development, machine build, debugging, FAT,
installation, site acceptance testing (SAT) and production validation.
• Maintain project risk registers and drive rapid, structured closure of technical issues.
• Personally participate in FAT and commissioning for critical equipment.
Flexible and intelligent automation
• Promote modular platforms that support multiple smartphone and laptop models, different device
generations, rapid tooling changes, recipe-based changeovers and software-defined process
parameters.
• Avoid unnecessary model-specific automation and maximize platform reuse wherever technically
and commercially sound.
• Work with vendors to progressively introduce machine vision, AI visual inspection, automated defect
classification, predictive maintenance, process-parameter optimization, machine data collection,
automated root-cause analysis, and digital twins or simulation where commercially justified.
